The Lead Community Center project is an economic driver that is unparalleled to other communities that will support the growth of vital industries including mining, America's deepest underground research facility, outdoor recreation, tourism, education and the arts. The new Lead community center will be a hub for services including childcare, an emergency shelter, a gathering space for seniors, an ADA compliant public library, and indoor recreation space.
Flex spaces will house services like the chamber of commerce and economic development offices, state offices such as WIC and/or DMV offices. The efficient use of this public facility will allow funds to shift to expand services, a model that combines services as an innovative solution to local issues.
At approximately 33,000 square feet, the total project cost is $23 million. Construction costs are estimated to rise over the next year. The total project cost includes demolition, new commercial construction, retaining/earthwork, paving, utilities, a design contingency and soft costs.

As fundraising continues and the project develops, community input will drive what is and is not included in the new Lead Community Center.

Site plan for the Lead Community Center Project
Lead has some unique challenges when it comes to building in the city limits including being land locked by rock hills, small lot sizes, extremely low inventory of available lots, few options for traffic flow and public parking, inadequate, old or failing infrastructure. After reviewing several options, including an empty lot on Main Street, Gold Run Park, and the old bowling alley, (below Ace Hardware on Glendale), it was determined that the current location would be best for a new building. The current location offers sufficient parking, easy access for school buses and child care drop-off. The location is less than 100 yards from the main route through Lead and within eye shot of the local grocery store, hardware store, hotel, and neighborhoods. Public improvements could include new pedestrian access routes from The Handley directly to Main Street.
